Beach Hut Spring Styles

Brighton & Hove is a great seaside town! Having lived near the sea for over 20 years, I can easily identify with what makes Brighton & Hove, and the Sussex coast, a superb place for a day at the beach.  [Aside: the parking can be a nightmare!]  So if you’re planning a return to your beach hut soon, you’ll no doubt have to spruce it up first!  The long winter months, salty sea, storms and debris may have caused damage.  Firstly, carry out repairs and maintenance.  Then check out our Beach Hut Spring Styles and share your favourite items with us.

Beach-time in Spring

I’m sure you have your very own reasons for spending time at the beach (write and let me know heather@callaways.co.uk).  I love the combination of sand (at low tide), shallow waters, seashells and sunshine.  At high tide, crashing waves, the screech of seagulls as they soar on the breeze, the smell of salty air.  Sunsets and sunrises can be idyllic, watching a fiery sun rise and set – ideal for instagram-able images!  The best bit? Having a promenade to walk along.  Others may jog, but I love admiring the colours of the beach huts set against the colour of the sea, in its coat of many colours.

Winter damage

What kind of repairs are you likely to have to organise after a long, hard winter?  Follow my TOP TIPS to make your Beach Hut 2022 ready.  If you’re thinking of selling your beach hut, this is even more important:

1. SECURITY

Use a combination of padlocks and bolts. This makes breaking and entry more difficult for ‘unwanted guests’.  Your padlocks may have rusted over the winter so a ‘quick change’ will do the trick.  There are numerous padlocks on the market, but you may wish to try these marine padlocks as an alternative.

2. MOULD

You did remember to remove items of linen, towels etc and wetsuits before winter set in, didn’t you?  There’s nothing worse than being greeted by a layer of mould as you return after the winter months.  But you can wipe down mould using our ‘Banish Beach Hut Mould Tips‘.

Let’s go through them one-by-one:

  • Move your furniture, fixings and beach paraphernalia away from your hut
  • Then either apply neat bleach (wearing gloves and old clothes).  Leave the doors open for ventilation. Using a sponge, wipe the bleach on affected areas.  If you have mould on the inside of the roof, wear protective masks so the bleach doesn’t drip into your eyes, or on your face.  The bleach will kill existing live spores.  However, you make be left with lighter marks
  • OR for a natural solution for getting rid of black mould, combine one part baking soda with five parts distilled white vinegar and five parts water in a spray bottle
  • OR using a simple cleaning solution of dishwashing soap and warm water
    1. Add a teaspoon of soap to a spray bottle filled with water and shake
    2. Spray the affected area and use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub away the mould; sponge up any excess liquid as you clean
    3. Completely dry the surface with an old towel/s
    4. See more tips at Spruce
  • Leave your beach hut to air for at least a day (easier to do if you have air vents in your hut)
  • Apply an anti-fungal/pesticide product to all the timbers inside.  Type ‘Anti fungal wood treatment uk‘ into your favourite browser for purchase/delivery.  Follow the directions on the product and then…
  • Finally, apply colour/varnish to cover up the staining (and use one of this year’s trending colours!)

3. WD40/BIKE OIL OR SIMILAR

I always carry WD40 with me when I’m visiting beach huts.  You may need these products to free up padlocks affected by wind, water, salt and sand during winter.  Some owners keep oil inside their beach hut – but it’s no good there if you can’t get inside!

4. PAINT

There are some gorgeous colours available for interior and exterior use.  Use gloss/satin for the interior.  Oil-based paint offers the best protection and longer-lasting results for exterior use. Or use high-quality exterior acrylic paints.

5. MARINE PLYWOOD

This is the wood to use for beach hut roof repairs as it is a good-quality, hardwood plywood made with waterproof glue.  However, it is not ‘rot-resistant’.  It’s hardly surprising that marine ply is a popular choice for building boats and boat parts.

Bring on Spring Style!

Accessorize your beach hut and bring on the style.  You can find beach hut accessories on the high street and on online.  Here are some that I simply love.

Style with Cushions

Denim is trending this spring time.  If you’re handy with a sewing machine, how about cutting up denim skirts and trousers and repurposing them into cushions?  Check out these marine cushions Denim Style Cushion Pier (marinesuperstore.com)

Cushions are a ‘must-have’ if you’re planning on spending a day at the beach.  Scatter them on your deck-chairs, sunbeds, on a rug to brighten up your day and enjoy better comfort.  Here are some I absolutely adore Pure Cotton Stripe Print Cushion | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

Mirror

Mirrors are fantastic for throwing light around (and make your beach hut look bigger!).  Reflections of the sea and sky (or touching up your sunscreen) make mirrors an ideal accessory in your beach hut like this one Nauticalia Brass Porthole Mirror (marinesuperstore.com)

Beach Towels

Who can resist a colourful, fluffy, big beach towel?  I’ve chosen some of my favourites here:

Catherine Lansfield Rainbow Pink and Orange Beach Towel Twin Pack | Dunelm

Search results for “50 off beach towels 010520” (marksandspencer.com)

John Lewis & Partners Beach Hut Towels, White

Stylish Hooks

It’s a good idea to hang items up in your beach – like towels, swimsuits, string bags (for assorted items).  I simply love these hooks which would look great in your home as well as your hut

Purity Geo Tile Grey Diamond Hook | Dunelm

Beach Hut Mugs etc

Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t like the thought of glass in a beach hut (ouch, bare feet!!).  Think colourful and sustainable with ideas from
