Beach Hut Celebrations on Galentine’s Day

Galentine’s Day

Galentine’s Day This Month – Not a Spelling Mistake!

We’re all used to February being the month that heart-shaped gifts, Cupid’s arrows and anonymous declarations of love are to be found because of Valentine’s Day on the 14th.

Now, there’s something else to celebrate that’s a little more down-to-earth but no less fun – the 13th is Galentine’s Day this month, not a spelling mistake!

The Barbie film might have declared that “Every night is girls’ night!” but in real life, things don’t really work like that. So the idea of having one day a year when women can celebrate their friendships with their girlfriends is a very welcome one.

Yes, it’s real!

Of course, it’s an unofficial thing, but a chance to let your best friends, sisters, mum or nan know how much they mean to you has got to be a good thing.

Although it shares the heart-shaped-everything look of its longer-established and similarly named event one day later, Galentine’s Day is all about a different kind of love.

The whole thing has its roots in the American comedy show ‘Parks and Recreation’, which featured it in 2010. One of the main characters, played by Amy Poehler, explains “it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it… ladies celebrating ladies.”

Singles friendly

Valentine’s Day can actually be a lonely time for some, but focusing on the positive and empowering side of female friendship means that it doesn’t matter what anyone’s relationship status might be.

Although it might only just be catching on in the UK, in America Galentine’s Day merchandise is sold in shops.  Online there’s plenty to be found at Amazon and Etsy. Some restaurants offer Galentine’s themed package deals and a few years ago even Michelle Obama celebrated on her Instagram and Twitter accounts.

At the hut

A beach hut owner never really needs an excuse to have friends and family round for some fun.  Galentine’s Day can be a good reason to open the doors and dust off the winter cobwebs.

How better to mark a midwinter outdoor get together than share with everyone a view of the ocean (well, English Channel) from the warmth and shelter of your hut?

You can tweak any traditional Valentine’s themes and with a little imagination decorate your hut to your heart’s desire. How about turning it into a ‘nail salon by the sea’ for one day only!

Of course, making sure there’s plenty of wine and chocolates to go round will always be a good idea too. Single friends or forgetful partners? Then why not get a jump on the romance of the 14th and buy each other flowers or book a floral party at your hut and learn how to make the perfect bouquet!

Whether you decide to simply kick back at your hut with a few well chosen cocktails or go the whole hog and arrange something special, Galentine’s Day at your ‘property on the prom’ can be a great way of spending some quality time together.
