Queen of Hove Beach-huts by Heather Hilder on March 30, 2017 HOVE’s BEACH-HUTS … .. are a world away from the stresses of everyday life, and a great way to spend lazy days with friends and family, says Heather Hilder-Darling, known affectionately by her colleagues at Callaways as ‘Queen of the Beach-Huts’. “Beach Huts stand, firm and unflinching, on the edge of the sea shore, impenetrable to the changing seasons. They may be battered by winter storms, weathered by blistering winds and peeled by rare days of unwavering sunshine and yet, on gorgeous summer days, residents and holidaymakers bask on the wide prom of Hove seafront in front of this wooden hut that is claimed as their own. They watch the world go by, enjoy ice-creams, and chat to passers-by. The Beach-Huts are a glorious sight in their bright colours. For a structure that doesn’t even boast the comforts of a caravan, why do people love them so much? Could it be– the love of being so close to the sea but protected from fierce sun, or winter storms?– the opportunity of investing in happy memories? – is it that this little parcel of seafront property gives convenience from having to lug folding-chairs, towels, costumes, coolers and the whole monopoly of seaside equipment, (bats and balls, surf-boards, lilos and dinghies) down to the beach on every visit? The truth is we don’t know, but it’s likely to be a combination of all the above. But what we do know is, whether you’re 5 years old or over 50, the colourful beach-hut brings something magical to everyone. It strips away all of life’s unnecessary stresses and takes you back to a time where you feel like a kid again, even if it’s just for a short time. Let’s be honest, every child loves to play house, and the addition of water and sand is a bonus (for big kids too), Christmas and Easter all rolled into one! We think that’s what a beach-hut is really all about.
